| Children are taught to develop and harmonize thought, feeling,
and action. Integration of the head, heart, and hands has been shown
in more than 80 years of Waldorf teaching to provide a strong base for
the development of a mental adaptability, initiative, and moral
strength in adult life. At Prairie Hill, students think through academic
challenges, feel through the arts, and activate
their will through hands-on activities. Our curriculum
integrates the arts – vocal music, strings, drama, storytelling,
movement, painting, drawing and sculpture – with the teaching
of math, science, and humanities. Integrating these realms into
the lessons leads the child to explore the world through imagination,
developing the power of the intellect and a real curiosity and love
of learning. Through
daily exposure, art, music, and movement are seamlessly integrated
into the curriculum. Singing, playing the wooden flute, and a stringed
instrument along with drama and knitting, weaving, sewing, woodworking,
ceramics, and gardening are interwoven with the academic subjects
to provide a fully integrated experience. Carefully developed age
appropriate movement activities are incorporated throughout each
day, engaging the child’s body, mind, and feelings to enhance
the cognitive and social development. Every child enjoys outdoor
play at least twice a day in beautiful woods, gardens, prairie, and playground.
